The Need for Bilingual Adjusters

Ya llegó el momento…the time has come. The adjusting industry has realized that bilingual adjusters are now a necessity. When Huracán Sandy hit the northeast and any warm body was deployed, carriers and adjusting firms had an “aha!” moment—there are many homeowners in the U.S. that do not have a great command of the English language. Now, let us start with getting rid of the elefante en el cuarto, the elephant in the room—immigration. Sure, there are varying opinions regarding an English language requirement for citizenship or residency. My parents escaped from Cuba in 1961, were citizens by 1968 and never looked back. They were part of the first wave of professionals and had very successful careers in the U.S., which required proficiency in English.  That was not the case for their friends and family that came over 30 years later, arrived here with a desire for work and love of freedom, but were in their late 40´s and 50´s. Learning a new language was difficult. Nonetheless, in areas of the country such as California, Texas, South Florida and parts of the Northeast, they were able to make a great living, regardless of their language skills. They own businesses, homes, cars etc., but have no clue what “Actual Cash Value Replacement” or “Non-Recoverable Depreciation” means. And thus comes in the bilingual adjuster.

The simple fact is that many insurance companies — All State and State Farm, for example — want bilingual adjusters helping their non-English-speaking customers.  This means that vendors such as Pilot Catastrophe ServicesE. A. Renfroe and other large firms are currently in the market for as many competent bilingual adjusters as they can recruit. A little-known fact in the claims business is that bilingual adjusters have higher pay schedules.  Simply put, this means that the adjusters and the IA firms get paid more when bilingual adjusters handle claims. Early attempts to tackle the problem of the lack of bilingual adjusters focused on recruiting adjusters who had the potential to gain fluency in a second language, like Spanish, and provide language training. It was a great idea but… a miserable failure. Unfortunately, the fluency level expected in Spanish was far too high and no one was successful at this. What did work was taking a bilingual adjuster that had difficulty reaching the high English fluency standard and putting them in language training. Thus, academic Spanish or Spanish as your first language is a requirement; English can be perfected over time.
