Become an adjuster in Iowa

In July 2025, Iowa began requiring insurance adjusters to be licensed. Now, if you want to work claims in Iowa, you will need to meet their state requirements, pass the state exam, and complete the application process.

Follow our step-by-step guide below to get your Iowa insurance claims adjuster license. We’ve also included information on how to renew your Iowa license and what reciprocity looks like for IA adjusters so you’ll have everything you need to obtain and maintain your license.

Let’s Get Started!

#1: Meet the Basic Requirements for an Iowa Adjuster License

Before you start taking steps to get your resident adjuster license, make sure you meet Iowa’s basic requirements.

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • P.O. boxes may only be used for mailing address
  • Non-U.S. citizens must provide a copy of a valid work permit issued by the U.S. Department of Immigration to the Iowa Insurance Division.

If you meet these basic requirements, it’s time to strategize how to ace the Iowa Insurance Adjuster state exam.

#2: Prepare for the Iowa Adjuster License State Exam

While a pre-licensing course isn’t required by the state, we highly recommend you take the AdjusterPro’s Iowa Adjuster Exam Prep Course so you’ll be fully prepared to ace the state exam.

Our course has been rigorously prepared according to Iowa’s new exam content outline. Our online classroom allows you to print reference materials, take practice tests, and even create your own quizzes to help with subjects you are struggling with. Once you’re consistently making 90% on your practice tests and passing all the quizzes with flying colors…it’s exam time!

#3: Register for and Pass the Iowa Adjuster Exam

You will register for the exam through the testing provider, PearsonVue.

To schedule your exam, first create an account at PearsonVue. Make sure that you create your web account with your legal name as it appears on your government-issued ID and that your personal information is correct.

Detailed information about the exam, process, and testing site options is available in the Iowa insurance candidate handbook.

#4: Submit Your Iowa Adjuster Application & Fingerprinting

Applications are submitted through NIPR. If you check yes on any of the background questions, you may need to submit additional paperwork with your application.

Once the application is submitted, NIPR will generate a confirmation message with additional instructions, including the Fieldprint code required to schedule your fingerprinting and background check.

#5: Complete Iowa’s Adjuster CE and License Renewal Requirements

Once you have your license, you’ll need to complete some additional steps every few years to keep it active. Iowa adjusters are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 2 hours of Ethics every renewal period.

Adjusters who maintain a valid email address with the Iowa Insurance Division will receive a courtesy renewal reminder approximately 60 days before their license expires.

Renew your license through NIPR.

AdjusterPro offers state-approved continuing education courses for Iowa adjusters, including the required ethics course. Courses can be purchased individually or as a discounted bundle.

Iowa Adjuster License Reciprocity

** Since Iowa’s adjuster license is new, reciprocity regulations are still being sorted out between the state departments of insurance. The information we have for reciprocity is the most up-to-date at this time.

Reciprocity means an adjuster holding a home state license can apply for an adjuster license in another state without having to take that state’s exam. If you want to learn more about reciprocity and why it’s vital to your success, visit our Reciprocity: The Truth About Adjuster Licensing Agreements Between States blog article.

Fees for reciprocal licenses vary by state, but on average you can expect to pay between $40 and $60 per application, although a few states charge up to $120.
